For someone starting new in the digital ecosystem, this is a startling question- “Why do I need SEO?” “What is SEO?” For starters, SEO is nothing but search engine optimization. This is a crucial discipline of digital marketing which enables the digital marketers to ensure their websites are optimized as per the search engine standards so that the company can achieve better visibility, more traffic, and higher time spent by visitors in organic (non-paid) fashion.
There are a couple of common misconceptions about SEO and we shall inspect them in this article.
So are you ready?
Here we go!
1. SEO is only for Google
This is a common wrong perception withhold by many. By definition, SEO is Search Engine Optimization.
Now, what is a search engine?
Any live software program which crawls the world wide web for retrieving the information you asked for. Having said that, Google is definitely a search engine rather a market leader in its own domain, but there are other market players too like Bing or Yandex.
Thus, when you are optimizing your website for being search engine friendly, you are trying to make it all search engine friendly unless you are only following the best practices for Google and have submitted your website to Google Search Console exclusively!
2. SEO is all about who ranks first
Surprised to hear that?
It is true that the first five search results on the first page receives more clicks compared to rest, but haven’t you behaved the same while you are on the next page of the search result? It is worth mentioning that it is not always necessary that the higher organic placements you have are directly proportional to higher traffic. Yes, you do have a higher probability of CTR.
Moreover, there is a lot of race on who is able to rank first, people sometimes miss the significance of rank zero!
Yes, there exists a rank zero, which comes above the rank one. Now I believe I have your full attention innit? Well, your SERP (Search Engine Rank Position) may be lower but you still stand the chance of ranking zero. There are certainly few cool tricks doing so.
3. All the keywords I use must match exactly for better SEO
And it is absolutely unnecessary. Yes! There are different parameters of keywords, viz., exact match, broad match, broad match modifier, negative match, and phrase match.
Having said that, why to worry about the exact match of keywords for your SEO?
Another important aspect to be taken care is the number of keywords being used. You certainly do not want to fall victim to keyword stuffing and get your SERP blacklisted as a penalty!
Finally, the recent updates of Google algorithm- Hummingbird update as it is named, the search action is also going to put thrust on the intent behind the inquiry made by a person to achieve the main goal- Relevance.
4. I don’t need a local SEO
One word- “WRONG”
Local SEO is extremely important and rather an opportunity for you to be found whenever a potential customer is nearby.
There are a lot of advertisements done by Google which motivates people to use the Near Me feature. Say you have a motorcycle repair shop, a fairly new shop and you have registered in Google My Business and why not, after all, it’s free. So whenever a person is in and around your shop and facing a problem with his bike, he can search for motorcycle repair shop near me and bam, you appear. Not only this, they can also reach your shop following the GPS. It is not mandatory to have a website for that, however, the more information you have, the higher the relevance quotient shots up.
5. SEO is for a website on laptop/ desktop
Let us analyze the customer behavior first. These days the penetration of mobile internet usage tops the laptop/ desktop usage. Everyone has a pocket-friendly gadget in hand. You are either on social media sites or listening to your favorite songs, watching movies, even doing voice search instead of typing.
Whenever in doubt, you immediately take out your phone to do the primary research.
Now, say you have a website whose load time is faster for the website but no technical SEO operation has been performed to decrease the load time for mobile phones. Worst, maybe load time is decent for mobile but the screen isn’t responsive. You earn bounces for your website and your credibility comes down. Be mobile ready and never miss out on an opportunity!
